Finding Containers to plant in...recycle, reuse, repurpose!
It's another cycle of planting time and I have been searching the house for what ever will hold soil and be suitable for growing plants in. I found some unusual containers in the garage, one being an old metal mailbox that we replaced a few years ago. I am glad that I saved it. We also had some sturdy boxes that I will line with plastic and small rocks for drainage. The latter worked well for us so it's a keeper.
Containers come in all shapes and sizes. The only factors to keep in mind when looking for a planter is that it will not obstruct the growth of the plant, it is appropriate for the root growth of the type of plant your growing and that it will hold soil. Everything else is up to the "imaaaagination"
Here is a list of some of the containers I have used:
Of course store bought planters
Sturdy cardboard boxes lined with plastic
Hamster cages that have been thoroughly cleaned.
The top of the cages we turned over and lined with plastic and the bottom tray was cleaned and used to hold small seed starting paper pots.
An old mail box-lined
Gallon milk containers
Bowls, baskets and ice cream containers
For seed starting we have used paper cups from coffee, plastic food containers, and my fav toilet-paper rolls packed tightly in a holder so the roll won't unravel.
And the list goes on and on.
Finding the containers is a recyclers dream. Making them work as container can be as easy as drilling holes, adding small rocks for drainage or lining them with plastic to hold soil. Container Gardening does not have to break the bank to be a success, just a little resourcefulness and determination.
Peace and happy planting .
